1. Heather Perry and the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ S: These Appetites
Sounds Like: A more angst-y Fiona Apple (who knew that was possible?) with heavier, more rock-driven beats
Perfect For: hating men and possibly yourself
For Fans Of: Fiona Apple, Cat Power
Check Out: "Nuptial Flight"
Heather Perry's EP These Appetites is a lyric driven album and a fairly interesting release overall. Her style might run a bit too close to other female artists, especially Fiona Apple and Alanis Morissette. The EP is disappointingly not cohesive, running from angst-y rock to soulful blues, but then again maybe there is something for everyone. Perry's voice is not quite strong enough to captivate a listener for the course of the album, but overall is a good songwriter.
2. Stuedabakerbrown: Closer
Sounds Like: 90's Rock
Perfect For: learning every word and rocking out with your best friends
For Fans Of: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Coldplay
Check Out: "London", "A Time For Fire"
Stuedabakerbrown are much more enjoyable to listen to than it is to pronounce their name. Their songs all sound vaguely familiar, but in a great way. Closer is reminiscent of the nineties rock we grew up with and is an intensely nostalgic album. With influences of the Gin Blossoms, Pearl Jam, and even Coldplay, Stuedabakerbrown is a necessity for every child of the nineties.
3. Brakes: Touchdown
Sounds Like: super upbeat mixture of pop, rock, indie, folk, and country
Perfect For: getting re-excited about music!
For Fans Of: Sondre Lerche, The Beatles, Belle & Sebastian
Check Out: "Worry About It Later", "Oh! Forever"
Wow. Brakes' new album Touchdown is upbeat and reminiscent of Belle & Sebastian, but completely original and exciting. Joyous is really the only way I can describe the feeling of discovering this superb album. I've been in the dark for years for having not known of them previously, but I have not been more excited about music in ages, and I attribute this solely to Brakes.
